Klaus Modick, born in Oldenburg in 1951, studied German, history and education at the University of Hamburg and received his doctorate with a thesis on Lion Feuchtwanger. From 1984 onward, he worked as a freelance writer and translator; before and alongside this, he was also employed as a lecturer and advertising copywriter. His work received numerous awards, including the Nicolas Born Prize, the Bettina von Arnim Prize, the Rheingau Literature Prize and the Hannelore Greve Prize. He was also a fellow of the Villa Massimo. His novels include *The Cretan Guest* (2003), *Sunset* (2011), *Concert Without a Poet* (2015), *Keyserling’s Secret* (2018) and *Fahrtwind* (2021).
