Karl Vocelka

Karl Vocelka (born 1947 in Vienna) is an Austrian historian. He studied, earned his doctorate and completed his habilitation in Austrian history at the University of Vienna. He was a professor of Austrian history there and served for many years as head of the university’s Institute of History. He also directed several major exhibitions academically and lectured in American university programs, including at Stanford and Duke. Vocelka has published extensively on Austrian history and the Habsburgs, including “The Habsburgs: A European Family History,” co-written with Walter Pohl, and “Franz Joseph I, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, 1830–1916,” co-written with Michaela Vocelka.
