Karl Georg Hirsch

Karl Georg Hirsch was born in Breslau in 1938 and moved to Leipzig in 1945. From 1960 to 1965 he studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig, where he subsequently worked as an assistant, head of the woodcut workshop, lecturer, and professor. In 1981–82, he was a visiting lecturer in wood engraving and woodcut at Jyväskylä in Finland. At the Leipzig academy, he served as pro-rector from 1990 to 1994 and dean of the Book Art and Graphic Design department from 1997 to 2000. Hirsch worked as a graphic artist and book illustrator. His honors included the GDR National Prize, Third Class (1983), and the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig (2011).
