Karl Barth

Karl Barth (1886–1968) was a German Reformed theologian. He studied in Bern, Berlin, Tübingen, and Marburg and worked as a pastor in Geneva and Safenwil from 1909 to 1921. His commentary on the Epistle to the Romans (1919/1922) had a major influence on twentieth-century Protestant theology. He later taught as a professor in Göttingen, Münster, and Bonn, and subsequently in Basel. Barth co-edited the journal Zwischen den Zeiten and was involved in the drafting of the Barmen Declaration. In 1935, he lost his position at the University of Bonn after refusing to take an unconditional oath of allegiance to Hitler. His major works include the Church Dogmatics.
