Juhani Aho (1861–1921) was a Finnish writer and journalist. He is regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Finnish realism and was associated with Young Finland, a movement that introduced new ideas about society, art, and morality in the late nineteenth century. Aho studied in Helsinki and began his literary career while Finland was under Russian rule. He gained early recognition with the novel “Rautatie” (1884). His writing often drew on Finnish everyday life and combined close social observation with psychological depth. Alongside his literary work, he advocated for the Finnish language and for Finland’s independence.
