Judith Kerr (1923–2019) was born in Berlin, the daughter of theatre critic Alfred Kerr. As a Jewish child, she fled Germany with her family in 1933, travelling via Switzerland and France to England. After the Second World War, she worked as a freelance painter and textile designer, and later as an editor, proofreader and screenwriter for the BBC. She became known as an author and illustrator of children’s and young adult books. Her works include the ‘When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit’ trilogy, ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ and the stories about Mog the forgetful cat. She received the German Youth Literature Prize in 1974 for ‘When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit’.
