Judith Butler (born 1956 in Cleveland, Ohio) is a philosopher and theorist. She studied philosophy at Yale and Heidelberg and was a professor of rhetoric, comparative literature, and critical theory at the University of California, Berkeley. She became widely known for her work on feminist theory, gender studies, power, and the ethics of nonviolence. In 2012, she received the Adorno Prize from the City of Frankfurt. Butler grew up in a Jewish family with Hungarian-Russian roots.
