Joseph Mitchell was born in Iona, North Carolina. At the age of 21, he arrived in New York one day after the stock market crash of 1929 and began his journalistic career as a crime reporter for various daily newspapers. He later became a chief reporter for The New Yorker and is regarded as a co-founder of New Journalism. He is particularly known for his reportage “Joe Gould’s Secret” (1964). After its publication, Mitchell did not publish another line until his death, though he continued to visit his office every day.
