Joseph Conrad (1857–1924), born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, was a Polish-born British writer who wrote in English. Born in what is now Berdychiv, Ukraine, he began a career at sea at the age of seventeen and later became a ship’s captain. His experiences as a sailor shaped many of his works. Around 1890 he increasingly turned to writing. His best-known novels and stories include *Almayer’s Folly*, *Lord Jim*, *Heart of Darkness*, *Nostromo*, *The Secret Agent* and *Typhoon*. Conrad is regarded as a major classic of English-language literature.
