Josef Albers

Josef Albers (1888–1976), born in Bottrop, Germany, was a German painter, art theorist, and educator. As an artist associated with the Bauhaus in Dessau and Berlin, he helped shape modern art and art education. In 1933, he emigrated to the United States with his wife, the artist Anni Albers. He later worked at Black Mountain College and in Bethany. Alongside his painting, he left an influential body of theoretical writing.
