Joris-Karl Huysmans, whose given name was Charles Marie Georges Huysmans, was a French writer and art critic. He was born in Paris on 5 February 1848 and died there on 12 May 1907. He worked as a civil servant at the French Ministry of the Interior while also publishing stories, novels, and prose texts. His best-known works include À rebours (1884; Against the Grain), Là-bas (1891), En route (1895), and La Cathédrale (1898).
