John Julius Norwich

John Julius Norwich (1929–2018) studied French and Russian at New College, Oxford. He began his career in the British Foreign Office before leaving diplomacy to become a writer. Norwich was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, the Royal Geographical Society and the Society of Antiquaries. He also served as chairman of the Venice in Peril Fund and honorary chairman of the World Monuments Fund.
