John Galsworthy

John Galsworthy (1867–1933) was an English writer. The son of wealthy parents, he studied law at Oxford but did not pursue the subject permanently and went to sea. There he met Joseph Conrad, who inspired his interest in literature. Galsworthy published his first works under a pseudonym. He became particularly known for the novel sequence *The Forsyte Saga*, regarded as a classic of modern English literature. In 1932, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his distinguished art of narration, which the committee regarded as finding its highest expression in *The Forsyte Saga*.
