John Dos Passos (1896–1970) was an American novelist and journalist. After studying at Harvard, he traveled to Europe in 1916 and served voluntarily in the French army’s ambulance corps during the First World War. He became best known for the urban novel “Manhattan Transfer” (1925) and the “U.S.A.” trilogy (1932–1936), which portrayed modern American society through multiperspectival narrative techniques. He also wrote travel books, essays, poetry, and plays. In 1947, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
