John Cleland

John Cleland (1709–1789) was an English writer, best known for his erotic novel Fanny Hill: Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (1748). He wrote the novel during a period in a debtors’ prison, and the work was censored because of its controversial content. Cleland also produced essays, translations, and plays.
