John B. Priestley (1894–1984), born in Bradford and deceased in Stratford-upon-Avon, was an English writer, journalist and literary critic. Before devoting himself fully to writing, he completed a commercial apprenticeship in the wool trade. During the First World War, he served in the British Army and was wounded. He became particularly known for his novels and plays, including the frequently filmed drama “An Inspector Calls”. During the Second World War, Priestley was also a prominent BBC broadcaster. In 1977, he was appointed to the British Order of Merit.
