Johanna Sebauer was born in Vienna in 1988 and grew up in a small village in Burgenland near the Hungarian border. She studied political science and journalism in Vienna, Aarhus, Santiago de Chile, and Hamburg, and has worked in science communication. Her short stories have appeared in several anthologies. Her debut novel, Nincshof, received the Harbour Front Literature Festival Debut Prize in 2023 and was shortlisted for the Hamburg Book of the Year. Her short story “Das Gurkerl” received the 3sat Prize and the Audience Prize at the 2024 Bachmann Competition.
