Johanna Reiss

Johanna Reiss was born in 1932 as Johanna (Annie) de Leeuw in Winterswijk, the Netherlands. A former teacher, she recounts her experiences during the Second World War in her autobiographical book And in the Window, the Sky. She originally intended to write down her memories only for her two daughters. The book received, among other honors, a Newbery Honor and the Buxtehuder Bulle; it was followed by two further volumes of memoirs.
