Johann Gottfried Seume

Johann Gottfried Seume (1763–1810) was a German writer and poet. He was born in Poserna near Weißenfels, the son of a farmer. After abandoning his studies in theology, he was forcibly recruited as a soldier and later served in the Prussian and Russian armies. He subsequently worked as a proofreader for the Göschen publishing house. He became best known for his travel writings, including “Spaziergang nach Syrakus im Jahre 1802” and “Mein Sommer.”
