Joe Haldeman was born in Oklahoma City in 1943. He studied physics, astronomy, mathematics and computer science at the universities of Maryland and Iowa. In 1967, he was drafted into military service and sent to Vietnam, where he was seriously wounded. His experiences of the war influenced his writing. He established himself as a science-fiction author with award-winning novels and short stories and also wrote for the stage.
