Joachim Köhler, born in Würzburg in 1952, studied philosophy and German studies in Tübingen, New York, and Würzburg. He received his doctorate in 1977 for a thesis on Friedrich Nietzsche. Köhler worked as a writer for the magazine Stern for fifteen years before focusing on biographies of significant and controversial figures in German cultural history. From 1989 onward, he published several books, including works on Nietzsche and Richard Wagner. His books have been translated into numerous languages.
