Jim Collins researched and taught how successful companies operate and advised leaders in the business and social sectors. He began his academic career at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he received an award for outstanding teaching in 1992. In 1995, he founded an institute for management research in Boulder, Colorado. As an author and co-author, he wrote six books that sold more than ten million copies worldwide, including »Der Weg zu den Besten«, »Immer erfolgreich. Collins was also an enthusiastic climber who completed one-day ascents of El Capitan and Half Dome in Yosemite Valley.
