Jean Rhys (born Ella Gwendolen Rees Williams) was born in 1890 on the Caribbean island of Dominica, the daughter of a Welsh doctor and a Creole mother. She moved to England at the age of sixteen and initially worked in the revue theatre. During the 1920s and 1930s, she spent time in Paris and began publishing under the name Jean Rhys. Her first book, the short-story collection »Left Bank«, appeared in 1927. Her novels include »Quartet« (1928), »After Leaving Mr Mackenzie« (1931), »Voyage in the Dark« (1934), and »Good Morning, Midnight« (1939). After a long period away from public attention, she was rediscovered in 1966 with »Wide Sargasso Sea«. Jean Rhys died in England in 1979.
