Jean-Paul Sartre (1905–1980) was a French philosopher, writer, and playwright. After studying philosophy, he worked as a secondary-school teacher from 1931 to 1944. His major works include the philosophical study *Being and Nothingness* (1943) and the play *The Flies* (1943). After the Second World War, his philosophy became a major point of reference for existentialism. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he declined. Sartre died in Paris in 1980.
