Jean-François Lyotard (1924–1998) was a French philosopher and a major figure in poststructuralist thought. He became known particularly for his writings on postmodernity and the critique of the subject. He taught philosophy in Paris and the United States, including at the University of Paris VIII. From 1954 to 1966, he was a member of the group Socialisme ou Barbarie. Lyotard co-founded the Collège International de Philosophie in Paris and the European Graduate School.
