Jean-Christophe Rufin, born in 1952 in Bourges, is a French physician and writer. He was a co-founder and longtime vice-president of Médecins Sans Frontières and worked as an adviser or secretary of state in the French Ministry of Defence and for the Red Cross. From 2007 to 2010, he served as France’s ambassador to Senegal. Rufin has written numerous novels and essays. He received the Prix Goncourt in 2001 for his novel Rouge Brésil. He has been a member of the Académie française since 2008.
