Janina David (1930–2023) was born in Poland. She grew up as a Jewish girl in a middle-class family. During the Second World War, she escaped from the Warsaw Ghetto, while her parents were killed. She left Poland in 1946 and initially lived in Paris before emigrating to Australia. With a scholarship, she studied art and social sciences at the University of Melbourne. She returned to Europe in 1958. She became known primarily for her autobiographical trilogy, “A Piece of Heaven,” “A Piece of Earth,” and “A Piece of Stranger,” as well as for the novel “A Part of the Whole.”
