James Rollins was born in Chicago in 1961. After studying, he opened a veterinary practice in California, which he gave up in 2009 to devote himself entirely to writing. He is best known for the adventure-thriller series Sigma Force. His work also includes seven standalone novels, the Moonfall fantasy series, and the Erin Granger horror trilogy. He published fantasy novels under the pen name James Clemens. A passionate cave diver and outdoor enthusiast, Rollins drew on scientific subjects as well as historical and mythological themes in his fiction.
