James McBride is an author, musician, screenwriter, and journalist. He became known for his autobiographical novel “The Color of Water,” which became a U.S. classic and a New York Times bestseller. His novel “The Miracle of St. Anna” was adapted for film by Spike Lee. McBride received the National Book Award for “The Good Lord Bird,” published in German as “Das verrückte Tagebuch des Henry Shackleford.” In 2015, Barack Obama awarded him the National Humanities Medal.
