James Kestrel is the pseudonym of American lawyer and novelist Jonathan Moore. Before completing his law studies in New Orleans, he worked variously as an English teacher, white-water rafting guide on the Rio Grande, owner of Taiwan’s first Mexican restaurant, counselor at a Texas wilderness camp for juvenile offenders, and investigator for a criminal defense lawyer in Washington, D.C. His novel Five Winters received the 2022 Edgar Award for Best Novel. His books have been translated into twelve languages.
