James Fenimore Cooper (1789–1851) was an American writer of the Romantic period. He wrote novels, essays, satires, travel accounts, and historical works. He is best known for his five Leatherstocking novels, including *The Last of the Mohicans*, as well as for his novels of the sea. Before beginning his literary career, Cooper served as a naval officer in the U.S. Navy.
