James A. Michener

James A. Michener was born in New York in 1907 and died in Austin, Texas, in 1997. After completing his university studies, he spent two years in Europe. He subsequently worked as a social studies teacher and later as an editor. During the Second World War, he volunteered for the Navy despite his Quaker faith. His wartime experiences informed the 1947 novel Im Korallenmeer, which received the Pulitzer Prize. Another well-known work is the novella Die Brücken von Toko-Ri, which was adapted into a film.
