Jacques Tardi (born 1946 in Valence) is a French comic-book writer and artist. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, and published his first comic story in the magazine Pilote in 1970. He gained international recognition with the ten-volume series »The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec«. His other major works include adaptations of crime novels featuring detective Nestor Burma, as well as books about the First and Second World Wars, including »Trench Warfare«, »It Was the War of the Trenches«, and »Me, René Tardi, Prisoner of War at Stalag IIB«. Tardi received, among other honors, the Grand Prix de la Ville d’Angoulême, an Eisner Award, the Max and Moritz Prize for lifetime achievement, and the Einhard Prize in 2021. In 2012, he declined France’s highest order, the Legion of Honour.
