J. L. Carr (1912–1994) was born in the English county of Yorkshire. After working as a teacher for many years, he founded his own publishing house, Quince Tree Press, in 1966 and wrote eight novels. His novel “A Month in the Country” was nominated for the Booker Prize in 1980. His other works include “How Steeple Sinderby Wanderers Won the Cup,” “A Day in Summer,” and “The Lessons of Schoolmaster George Harpole.”
