Iwan Schmeljow

Ivan Sergeyevich Shmelyov (1873–1950) was a Russian writer. Born in Moscow into a merchant family, he became widely known in 1911 with his novel *The Man from the Restaurant*. Maxim Gorky supported Shmelyov and published some of his works. After the death of his son during the Russian Civil War, Shmelyov emigrated to France. He wrote numerous further books there, including works shaped by the lives of rural people and the urban working class. Shmelyov died near Paris in 1950.
