Italo Calvino

Italo Calvino (1923–1985) was an Italian writer. He was born in Santiago de las Vegas, Cuba, and grew up in San Remo. After his studies, he worked as a journalist and editor, including for many years at the Einaudi publishing house. He became known as one of the most innovative Italian writers of the postwar period through novels such as *The Cloven Viscount*, *The Baron in the Trees*, *Invisible Cities*, and *If on a winter’s night a traveler*. He wrote novels, short stories, and essays; his work received numerous awards and was translated into many languages. Calvino died in Siena in 1985.
