Irina Mashinski

Irina Mashinski was born in Moscow, studied at Moscow University, and earned a doctorate there with a dissertation on paleogeography and landscape theory. After emigrating to the United States in 1991, she worked as a high-school mathematics teacher and taught history and meteorology at several universities. She published The Naked World and Giornata, as well as eleven volumes of poetry and essays in Russian. With Robert Chandler and Boris Dralyuk, she edited The Penguin Book of Russian Poetry (2015) and co-translated Lev Ozerov’s Portraits Without Frames (2018). Mashinski received several Russian literary prizes, won the Joseph Brodsky/Stephen Spender Translation Competition in 2012 with Boris Dralyuk, and held a Hawthornden Fellowship in 2017.
