Ilse Losa

Ilse Losa (born in Buer near Osnabrück in 1913) was a German-born Portuguese writer, translator, and editor. She fled Germany for Portugal in 1934, married the architect Arménio Losa, and became a Portuguese citizen in 1935. She initially worked as an educator. Writing in Portuguese, she published three novels, collections of stories, children’s books, plays for children, and journalistic texts. She also translated and edited German literature for Portuguese publishers and Portuguese literature for German publishers. One of her best-known works is “Die Welt, in der ich lebte” (“The World in Which I Lived”). She received numerous literary awards and was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1991.
