Ilse Aichinger

Ilse Aichinger (1921–2016) was an Austrian writer and one of the important authors of postwar German-language literature. Born in Vienna, she studied medicine for five semesters after the Second World War. She then worked as an editor at S. Fischer Verlag before devoting herself fully to writing. Her partly autobiographical novel “Die größere Hoffnung” was published in 1948. Her other works include “Der Gefesselte,” the radio play “Gare Maritime,” and the poetry collection “Verschenkter Rat.” Aichinger was a member of Group 47 and received, among other honors, the Group 47 Prize in 1952, the Petrarca Prize in 1982, and the Austrian State Prize for Literature in 1995.
