Ian Kumekawa is an American historian whose work focuses on the history of economic thought and global capitalism in the 19th and 20th centuries. The idea for his book *Beliebige Fracht* emerged in New York after he learned about a prison ship on the East River at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.
