Ian Kershaw

Ian Kershaw, born in 1943, is a historian of modern and contemporary history. He studied at the universities of Liverpool and Oxford and taught at the universities of Manchester and Nottingham from 1968 to 1989. He subsequently served as Professor of Modern History at the University of Sheffield until his retirement. He is best known for his two-volume biography of Adolf Hitler. His other major works include "To Hell and Back" ("Höllensturz"), "Roller-Coaster" ("Achterbahn"), "Fateful Choices" ("Wendepunkte") and "The End" ("Das Ende"). Kershaw received, among other honors, the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding, the Karlsmedaille and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany; he was knighted in 2002.
