Hugo Pratt was born in Rimini in 1927. His first comic, Pik As, was published in 1945. He subsequently created further black-and-white series for the press market. In 1959, Pratt went to London, where he worked on the War Picture Library series; a year later, he moved to Ireland. The first story featuring Corto Maltese, regarded as Pratt’s alter ego, appeared in 1970. Pratt died in Lausanne in 1995 and is considered one of the major representatives of literary comics.
