Hugh Johnson

Hugh Johnson (born in 1939 in London) studied English at King’s College, Cambridge. He then worked as an editor for Vogue and House & Garden before focusing increasingly on wine journalism. He was a wine correspondent for The Sunday Times and published his first book, Wine, in 1966. He became particularly well known for The World Atlas of Wine (1971), which was later extensively revised in collaboration with Jancis Robinson, as well as for the annually updated guide The Little Johnson, first published in 1978, and The Great Johnson, first published in 1984. His wine publications earned him, among other distinctions, the Bordeaux Academy’s Literature Prize in 1987 and the Carl Friedrich von Rumohr Ring in 1998. He later handed over editorship of The Little Johnson to Margaret Rand and retired as an author and editor.
