Hubert Selby

Hubert Selby was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1928. At the age of 15, he joined the merchant navy and later worked as a teacher, secretary, shorthand typist, and insurance clerk in Manhattan. In 1964, he published his first and best-known novel, *Last Exit to Brooklyn*, which led to an obscenity trial in England.
