Howard Fast (1914–2003) was an American writer. Born in New York to Ukrainian immigrant parents, he published his first novel at the age of 19, and it became a bestseller. From 1943 to 1957, he was a member of the Communist Party of the United States; in 1950, he spent three months in prison for this and wrote his best-known novel, *Spartacus*, there. In addition to numerous historical novels, Fast wrote science fiction and crime novels under the pseudonym E. V. Cunningham.
