Horace (Quintus Horatius Flaccus, born in 65 BCE in Venusia) was a Roman poet of the Augustan era. He received an unusually extensive education for his social background in Rome and Athens. During the civil war, he served as a military tribune under Brutus before turning to poetry. Virgil and Lucius Varius Rufus introduced him to the circle of Maecenas. His major works include the “Epodes,” “Satires,” “Odes,” “Ars Poetica,” and the “Carmen Saeculare,” commissioned by Augustus. Horace died on November 27 BCE.
