Hiromi Kawakami (born 1958 in Tokyo) is a Japanese writer. She studied natural sciences and initially taught biology before turning to literature. She has published short stories and novels since the early 1990s. Her best-known works include The Sky Is Blue, the Earth Is White, Mr. Nakano’s Thrift Shop and The Ten Loves of Nishino. Her books have received numerous Japanese literary awards; The Sky Is Blue, the Earth Is White was also awarded the Tanizaki Prize and adapted for film.
