Hildegard Knef (1925–2002) was a German actress, chanson singer, and writer. Born in Ulm and raised in Berlin, she initially worked as an animation artist at UFA. She became known primarily for her film career in postwar Germany and later as a singer. Her autobiography, “The Gift Horse,” established her as a writer; published in 1970, it reached number one on the Spiegel bestseller list and was translated into 17 languages.
