Henryk Grynberg was born in Warsaw in 1936. During the German occupation, he survived with his mother in various hiding places in the countryside. After the war, he studied journalism in Warsaw. He left Poland in 1967 in the face of growing antisemitism. Grynberg became known as a Polish-Jewish writer. Many of his stories and essays draw on his own life and address the threat to Jewish life. His works include “The Jewish War,” “The Victory,” “Fatherland,” and “Unartistic Truth.” Until 1989, his extensive body of work was published in Poland almost exclusively by émigré presses, and it received several awards there.
