Henrik Pontoppidan

Henrik Pontoppidan (1857–1943) was a Danish author. He grew up in East Jutland as the son of a pastor, abandoned an engineering degree, and subsequently worked as a folk high school teacher and journalist. He began publishing short stories in 1881. His major works include the novels *The Promised Land* (*Det forjættede Land*), *Lucky Per* (*Lykke-Per*), and *The Realm of the Dead* (*De Dødes Rige*). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1917.
